Are you holding your breath waiting to exhale? Maybe it's time to breathe again...
Most of us won't travel around the world for a year to Eat, Pray, Love like Elizabeth Gilbert did when she visited Italy, India, and Indonesia after her life fell apart. She captured her adventures in a memoir that spent 187 weeks at the top of the New York Times' Best Seller List - and then was made into a box office smash starring Julia Roberts. What a way to fall apart - and get back up again!
We may not have the flexibility that Elizabeth had, but we can take a load off right where we are in order to recalibrate and rejuvenate our lives. Perhaps our adventure might take us to a log cabin or wherever we can spend time unplugged from the incessant noise that technology creates - even for a few minutes a day. My adventure looks something like Sleep, Play, Read...
For years I had been running at top speeds when I realized that I was doing unnecessary damage to me and to my family. In the end I really wasn't doing my employers any favors either. It's safe to say that I know a little bit about OVER doing it. Flip side - I absolutely loved it!

Your Well-Being Matters!
Calls for improved well-being metrics as an indicator of economic strength are increasing amid research that tells us what we already know. We've been working ourselves way too hard without enough restorative breaks in between.

...not taking vacation has been found to correspond to increased chances of heart disease for both men and women
The cost of stress-related health care is estimated at more than $300 billion a year

Measuring well-being can be complex, but resolve among world leaders and research entities are pulling it together. One goal is to calculate in monetary terms how much our well-being costs or produces for our country's GDP. It really matters that we take care of ourselves - and not just for our families. Our well-being matters to our entire country!
OECD dimensions of well-being include health status, subjective well-being, civic engagement and governance, job and earnings, education and skills, environmental quality, housing, income and wealth, work-life balance, social connections, and personal security.

Vacations Are Trending in the Wrong Direction
Yep - the work still has to get done, but self-maintenance is an important part of the equation that shouldn't be overlooked. The demands aren't going to slow down so we have to either change our strategies or create new ones that will ensure our ability to add value long-term.

Get Some Sleep!
Unplug and give it a rest already! That's what I tell myself often these days. This is so much easier said than done, but it's worth (just shy of) a 2-mile walk for an adult who misses a night of sleep - and it costs a ton of money in health care bills.
Shucks - even geniuses take time to sleep!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Each year, sleep disorders, sleep deprivation, and sleepiness add an estimated $15.9 billion to the national health care bill
Additional costs to society for related health problems, lost worker productivity, and accidents have not been calculated

We take care of our children, our cars, our homes, our jobs, our businesses, our yards, our parents, our ________ (fill in the blank). What about our "selves"?!
